Ethylene Acrylic Rubber (AEM) is a polymer primarily composed of ethylene and methyl acrylate, with a small amount of carboxylic acid groups. It's known for its excellent resistance to heat, chemicals, ozone, and oil. AEM can withstand lubricating oils, greases (even those with aggressive additives), and power steering and transmission fluids. AEM, often marketed under the trade name Vamac®, offers slightly better heat resistance and greater strength than Polyacrylate Rubber (ACM). However, its resistance to mineral oils is generally lower. AEM is commonly used in automotive applications, particularly in air management systems and powertrains. It provides long-lasting performance, even under exposure to diverse chemicals and additives, across a broad temperature range. Specific automotive applications of AEM include hose applications, engine and transmission seals, and turbocharger components. AEM seals, such as cylinder head cover gaskets, maintain their sealing properties under pressure and resist various lubricants and fluids, even those containing high additive concentrations.
